Portland has thousands of stucco homes built between 1900 and 1960 — craftsman bungalows, Tudor revivals, Spanish colonial cottages, and mid-century ranches. The stucco on these homes is traditional three-coat portland cement plaster, applied directly over wood lath or metal lath. It is dense, hard, and often still in excellent condition after 80 or 100 years — but it requires a craftsman who understands it.
Traditional stucco is not the same as modern synthetic systems. It has different expansion and contraction characteristics, different crack patterns, and it bonds differently to repair materials. Using the wrong product on a historic stucco home — particularly a flexible or polymer-modified patch on a rigid portland cement base — can cause the repair to fail or create new cracks at the patch boundary.

Dash & Cat Face

Smooth Trowel Finish

Stucco is one of the best finishes for retaining walls in the Pacific Northwest — it bonds tightly to concrete block and poured concrete, resists moisture, and can be finished in any texture or color to match the surrounding property.
We also handle new stucco applications on additions, remodels, detached garages, ADUs, and new construction. Whether you are building a new structure and need stucco applied from scratch, or adding onto an existing stucco home and need the new section to match seamlessly, we have the experience to do it right. Traditional Three-Coat Portland Cement Stucco
The original stucco system used on Portland homes from the early 1900s through the mid-20th century. Applied in three layers — scratch coat, brown coat, and finish coat — over wood or metal lath. Dense, durable, and breathable. We repair and restore traditional stucco using compatible portland cement mixes and hand-applied textures matched to the original.
One-Coat Synthetic Stucco
A polymer-modified system applied in a single layer over a fiberglass mesh. Common on homes built from the 1980s onward. More flexible than traditional stucco, but requires compatible repair materials and proper sealant detailing to perform well. We repair one-coat systems with matched materials and address the sealant joints that are typically the first point of failure.
Sto Cement Board Stucco Systems
A modern high-performance system using Sto-approved cement board sheathing, drainage mat, base coat, and finish coat. Ideal for new construction, additions, and full re-cladding projects where the original system has failed beyond repair. We are Sto certified applicators and install these systems to manufacturer specifications.
Sto Powerwall Drainage Systems
A drainage-integrated stucco system designed specifically for wet climates. Incorporates a built-in drainage plane that allows any incidental moisture to exit the wall assembly before it can cause damage. Particularly well-suited to the Pacific Northwest. We install Sto Powerwall on new construction and re-cladding projects throughout Oregon and Washington.
Protective Coatings
Elastomeric Coatings & StoColor Lotusan
Not every stucco problem requires a full repair. On homes where the stucco is structurally sound but showing widespread hairline cracking, surface erosion, or fading, an elastomeric wall coating can restore the appearance and extend the life of the system significantly.
Elastomeric coatings are thick, flexible, waterproof membranes that bridge hairline cracks and seal the surface against water intrusion. Applied correctly over properly prepared stucco, they can add decades of service life to an aging system without the cost of full replacement.
We also apply StoColor Lotusan — a premium exterior coating engineered with lotus-effect technology that causes water and dirt to bead off the surface rather than absorbing into it. Lotusan is self-cleaning, highly breathable, and provides exceptional long-term protection in wet climates like Portland's. It is one of the best investments you can make in a stucco home that is otherwise in good condition.
